Call for Community Showcase
The BCS BritCHI Community Showcase offers an opportunity for researchers to reflect on their previously published work and engage in conversations driven by it, whether this is a hot take, a reflection on methodology, or something from prior research. Submissions will therefore be of the author’s already published work with a very short commentary on what they would like to discuss at the event.
We invite authors to:
- Revisit and expand upon your own previously published work
- Reflect on feedback and the impact of the work since publication
- Stimulate deeper community dialogue and critical reflection
- Offer nuanced insights into the research journey, challenges, and broader implications
- Bring together separate works (all written by the submitting authors) to discuss emergent areas, methods or themes in HCI research
- Give a ‘hot take’ or provocation based on their previously published work
- Offer counter-evidence to acknowledged HCI theory, methods, findings, models, etc
There are no restrictions or categories for submissions; for example, authors could engage with multimedia, use slides, or present their work in the way they feel best represents their topic or orientation.
Format
Authors will get a short presentation slot to discuss a ‘hot take’ or reflection on their previously published work. Sessions will be thematically linked around methods, challenges, research focus, or novelty of the topic.
The Community Showcase will provide opportunities for in-depth Q&A and community dialogue through a series of presentations and a facilitated fireside chat.
The audience will be given the opportunity to reflect and respond to the discussion through both questions, and an asynchronous response platform (such as Slido) to share thoughts as the presentations and discussion progress.
If presenters are unsure or would like to structure their time differently (i.e., a video or an interactive demo) then please do not hesitate to get in touch with the chairs (community@britchi.uk).
We will let authors know the outcome of their submission at least two weeks before the Earlybird Registration Deadline on the 10th of September, allowing them to register at the reduced fee rate.
Submission Process
Please complete this Expressions of Interest form to submit.
You will need to complete brief sections on:
- The title of the talk
- A short summary of the presentation, which makes clear the ‘hot take’ that the presentation will cover (max 150 words).
- The DOI and reference for the paper(s) the talk is based on
- The title(s) of the originally published paper
- The abstract(s) of the published paper
While the track will be non-archival, presenters will be recognised through their inclusion in the final conference programme.
Accepted papers will be presented during the conference in oral sessions. At least one author must register and attend the conference to present the work.
Selection Criteria
Submissions will be curated by a multidisciplinary jury using criteria appropriate to the submission’s research approach, medium, and contribution.
The jury will consider the following when deciding which submissions to curate into fireside chats:
- Significance and relevance to British HCI or related fields
- Originality, innovation, or critical contribution
- Your hot take’s likelihood to generate interest
- The diversity of submission topics
- Consideration of cultural relevance, inclusivity, accessibility, sustainability, or ethics where appropriate
