Call for Short Papers

We invite researchers, practitioners, and academics to submit short research papers that present emerging ideas, preliminary results, and novel concepts in areas of HCI. This track is designed to showcase cutting-edge research that is still in progress but offers promising contributions to the field.

We welcome submissions around a diversity of topics and methodologies. Examples might include:

  • An original and innovative technology, technique, or prototype with or without an accompanying evaluation
  • A short qualitative or quantitative study with a complete analysis
  • Preliminary results of work-in-progress research
  • A “sequel” to a prior research contribution
  • A “prequel” to motivate or provoke novel conversations or future work
  • Position papers that provoke novel conversations for the discipline

Further information on potential HCI contributions can be found here: https://chi2025.acm.org/contributions-to-chi/

Selection Process

Short paper submissions will be juried, i.e. they will be reviewed by the Committee. Juried content is generally not required to make the same level of lasting and significant contribution to our knowledge and understanding as refereed content (full papers). Authors may expect to receive light feedback of up to a few paragraphs in length.

Short Papers will be assessed based on the following criteria:

  • Contribution and fit to the conference: Present research or ideas that will stimulate interesting conversations at the conference.
  • Significance: Focus on a significant problem or question that other HCI researchers will find influential or compelling.
  • Novelty and contribution: Make a novel, albeit small, contribution to the field.
  • Approach: Clearly present and justify the methods within the submission.
  • Clarity: Demonstrate clarity of writing, conform to the formatting requirements and the page limit.

Submission Guidelines

Multiple paper submissions and submitting across multiple tracks: If you are planning to be an author on multiple submissions, please carefully read information below regarding publication fees before submitting your work.

Paper Length: Short papers should be between 4 and 6 pages, excluding references. Appendices are optional, but should not exceed 2 pages in length.

Formatting: Please adhere to the Electronic Workshops in Computing paper format and ensure you use the template provided. Authors should submit their paper in PDF format.

Anonymity: Authors should ensure that their submissions are fully anonymised. This includes referring to your own past work in the 3rd person and fully referencing your past work (rather than listing some references as “Anonymous”)

Originality: Submissions must present original work not previously published or under review elsewhere.

Use of AI: Authors should declare how AI has been used in the research (i.e. in the idea generation, literature review, data collection, and writing) in the method section of the paper. The authors may use an Appendix if this additional space is needed to achieve this.
