  how generative artificial intelligence (AI) works and the garbage that fe
 eds them\, i.e.\, all sorts of junk from around the Internet. Dominant nar
 ratives have zeroed in on the problem of hallucinations. In this provocati
 on\, we aim to shift the conversation towards greater nuance (while retain
 ing the fecal verbiage). With ChatGPT as our scapegoat\, we explore the no
 tion of shit-talking within conversational interactions. We raise theoreti
 cal questions\, propose harmful and potentially worthwhile applications\, 
 and discuss design strategies. We include demonstrations with ChatGPT\, fo
 r good measure. Gather ’round and join us in talking shit about—and wi
