SUMMARY:From Accountability to Disclosure: A Citation Analysis of Positiona
 lity Statements in HCI
DESCRIPTION:BritCHI 2026 · Paper Session 5: Critical and Responsible HCI\n
 Ferreira\, Sanches\nPositionality statements have grown rapidly in HCI\, y
et their theoretical grounding remains unclear. We conduct a citation anal
ysis of ACM DL publications making claims about positionality statements\,
together with the literature they cite. From 36 papers we extract 48 exce
rpts citing 26 distinct works. Only 9 of those works engage with positiona
lity statements as the concept is used in HCI\, and only 3 offer affirmati
ve and robust grounding. Citation practices transform reflexivity’s proc
essual accountability into formalized disclosure\, and redirect standpoint
epistemology from elevating marginalized knowledge towards centring resea
rcher identities. Positionality statements\, as currently theorized\, ther
efore risk undermining the goals of accountability and epistemic justice t
hey seek to advance. We suggest resisting formalized disclosure\, operatio
nalizing reflexive transparency through process documentation\, and re-cen
tring empirical focus on marginalized knowledge. Concerns about the practi
ce have so far been largely conceptual\; we provide systematic citational
 evidence for them.
